Operetta and ...
Emmerich Kálmán, the Hungarian king of operetta, only ever wanted to compose music with »that special spark which is about to ignite and whisk people away.« But Kálmán was not the only composer blessed with that kind of genius; so too were members of those great dynasties of the golden and silver ages of operetta from Strauss to Lehár. The six-concert »Operetta and…« subscription series promises that special spark, captivating rhythms and memorable melodies galore. »Berlin Air« is celebrated in one concert presented by Jochen Kowalski. Star tenor Daniel Behle brings Lehár's »Count of Luxembourg« to the stage and the Cologne-based WDR Funkhausorchester invites audiences to Broadway with two famous musicals by Leonard Bernstein. Two other equally sparkling guest appearances for the diary: the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam performing Strauss waltzes under Franz Welser-Möst, and René Jacobs, that early-music gold-digger, bringing us an 'operetta' from the baroque era: »Don Quixote« by Italian composer Francesco Bartolomeo Conti.
