Portrait of Ensemble Modern
Every time the musicians in Ensemble Modern from Frankfurt have performed at the Kölner Philharmonie – playing Helmut Lachenmann's music or Frank Zappa's, the main part in a Steve Reich video opera or in Heiner Goebbels' "Eislermaterial" music collage – audiences have been won over by their tremendous versatility, and they have encouraged many people not to shy away from contemporary music. Now, with no fewer than three different projects, we see Ensemble Modern writing a new chapter in their success story. The musicians have invited Marcel Beyer, the Büchner Prize winner, for their reading concert, in which a colourful interplay develops via miniature dialogues between speaker and instruments. "Flight" is then the theme of the concert featuring an oratorio by the Bohemian baroque composer Jan Dismas Zelenka and the chamber opera "A Wintery Spring" by the Jordanian composer Saed Haddad. And for their third concert Ensemble Modern present a classic of instrumental theatre: "Secret Theatre" by the British composer Harrison Birtwistle.
