The term "classic" has long been reserved for things whose uniqueness and individuality set the benchmark against which others are judged. And exactly these qualities are manifested by the works, soloists, conductors and orchestras in the Classics! subscription series. Two outstanding violinists, Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Isabelle Faust, perform with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, each playing one of the most emblematic works in the modern concerto repertoire. Directed by Valery Gergiev, the Munich Philharmonic follows the trail of Richard Wagner and also the footsteps of the Wagnerian Richard Strauss. The French period-instrument ensemble Le Cercle de l’Harmonie performs sacred works by Franz Schubert and by his great role model Ludwig van Beethoven, whilst the Polish pianist Piotr Anderszewski makes the most wonderful tone colours shine in two Mozart piano concertos. The Classics! series then reaches its conclusion with a guest performance by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe under Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Like the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe owes its glorious rise to fame to a conductor and champion of music who went far beyond fulfilling the 'classic' criteria and instilling those qualities in his ensembles: the late, great Claudio Abbado.
