Divertimento in Italian means fun and entertainment, which this new subscription series offers in abundance from the first concert right to the last. From the off, the best in baroque entertainment comes to the Philharmonie stage: in his Purcell programme with the ensemble L'Arpeggiata, Philippe Jaroussky not only enchants with magically luminous melodies but also displays all his showman credentials. The other concerts continue in the same spirit. Cool charmer Max Raabe whisks us back to the 1920s. Raabe-fan and brilliant classical baritone Thomas Quasthoff focuses on jazz whilst his baritone colleague Thomas Hampson sings operetta. For their part, Franui Musicbanda from East Tyrol take a quirky look at the value of boredom. Even new-music legends like composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann had a big soft spot for fun, as the WDR Funkhausorchester Köln demonstrate for example with Zimmermann's potpourri of folk dances "Söbensprung" and his orchestration of Jacques Offenbach's operetta "The Magic Violin".
