“Mahler had always worried me … Mahler has always troubled me because he doesn't reassure you,” says Bernard Haitink about the composer of whose music he has been the leading champion. In the 1960s Haitink was one of the first – alongside Leonard Bernstein and Rafael Kubelík – to record Gustav Mahler's complete works on gramophone. Mahler is therefore a must for the two concerts that Haitink, now approaching 90, will conduct in Cologne. Anna Lucia Richter and Hanno Müller-Brachmann have already performed Mahler's “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” song cycle with Haitink on tour with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe to great acclaim from the press and audiences alike. And Gautier Capuçon, who performs Schumann's Cello Concerto, has already won plaudits under Haitink's baton too. This is the first opportunity to hear these three soloists perform these works in Cologne.
