When Simon Rattle succeeded Claudio Abbado as the Berliner Philharmoniker's chief conductor in 2002, it sent a shockwave through the classical music world, and a new era for the orchestra began. With his innovative programming, the new curly-haired conductor from Liverpool reset the compass and led the world-famous orchestra from the river Spree on new adventures around the globe. In this sixteenth and final year of his tenure Sir Simon now brings his orchestra to Cologne for their seventh visit. But there will be no time for farewell tears because Cologne fans only have to wait until January to welcome Rattle back to the Rhine in his new role as chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra.
